Youth Action for Sustainable Development Sierra Leone (YAD-SL) is a youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing inclusive and sustainable development throughout Sierra Leone. We operate at the nexus of advocacy, innovation, and grassroots initiatives, empowering young people and communities through education, environmental stewardship, social inclusion, and community-driven solutions.

Youth Action for Sustainable Development Sierra Leone (YAD-SL) is a youth-led nonprofit organization committed to advancing inclusive and sustainable development through community-driven initiatives, youth leadership, and evidence-based methodologies. Established in 2024, YAD-SL empowers young individuals and communities across Sierra Leone by addressing critical social, environmental, and economic challenges that impede opportunities and resilience.

Our mission is founded on the principle that sustainable development stems from empowered communities and active youth participation. We operate at the nexus of grassroots efforts and systemic transformation, connecting local realities with innovative strategies that promote education, climate resilience, gender equality, health, social inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods.

Through advocacy, capacity building, mentorship, research, and community engagement, we convert community-identified needs into actionable solutions that yield measurable and lasting impact. Our programs prioritize children, youth, women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups, ensuring those most affected by inequality and vulnerability are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and platforms necessary to lead transformative change.

YAD-SL collaborates with communities, government agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen local solutions and contribute significantly to Sierra Leone’s sustainable development goals. We are dedicated to nurturing a generation of informed, skilled, and responsible young leaders who drive positive change and cultivate resilient communities for the future.

Inclusive: We advocate for equal opportunities, diversity, and meaningful participation, ensuring representation and empowerment of women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups.

Sustainable: We develop solutions that tackle current challenges while fostering enduring social, environmental, and economic benefits for communities.

Accountable: We commit to transparency, integrity, and responsible resource management, maintaining trust with communities, partners, and stakeholders.

Innovative: We foster creativity, continuous learning, and novel approaches to create effective solutions that address evolving community needs.

Adaptive: We maintain flexibility and responsiveness by continuously learning, refining strategies, and embracing new ideas to effectively meet changing community realities and emerging challenges.

A growing movement of young individuals is actively striving to secure their rightful place in society. They are motivated by concerning rates of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, peer involvement, domestic violence, unemployment and underemployment, as well as unequal access to quality education, healthcare, and housing.

Our objective is to address and implement sustainable solutions for the critical issues affecting our youth.

If these challenges are not effectively addressed and incorporated into national development strategies, they risk fostering increased alienation and radicalization among young people, ultimately exacerbating poverty levels.

At Youth Action for Sustainable Development Sierra Leone (YAD-SL), our initiatives are structured around three interrelated thematic areas that address the fundamental causes of inequality, limited opportunities, climate vulnerability, and social exclusion. Through youth leadership, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, we implement sustainable solutions that enhance lives and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

1. Environmental & Climate Initiative

We advance environmental sustainability and climate resilience by promoting youth-led conservation efforts, climate education, ecosystem restoration, waste management, and community adaptation projects. By empowering young individuals as environmental advocates, we support locally driven solutions that safeguard natural resources, bolster resilience, and foster sustainable green livelihoods.

2. Health, Gender & Social Inclusion

Our work aims to improve health outcomes and promote equality by advocating for gender justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), child protection, disability inclusion, and the prevention of gender-based violence. Through advocacy, awareness campaigns, community involvement, and partnerships, we cultivate inclusive communities where all individuals can live with dignity, safety, and equitable access to services, contributing to SDGs.

3. Education & Empowerment

We provide young people with access to quality education, leadership development, vocational and digital skills training, entrepreneurship programs, and mentorship. By enhancing knowledge, confidence, and civic engagement, we empower youth to become agents of change who drive inclusive economic growth and sustainable community development.
